Bespoke Non-Toxic Nursing Chairs
Creating a peaceful, healthy environment for your new baby starts with the pieces you bring into your nursery. Many parents carefully choose untreated wooden cots, organic mattresses, and plastic-free toys to keep their child's space clean. Yet, while almost all other baby furniture is left untreated, standard mass-produced nursing chairs still are built using synthetic polyurethane foams and harsh chemical flame retardants that can off-gas into the room.
At my studio in Cornwall, I handcraft beautiful, heirloom-quality nursery chairs designed to be as healthy for your home as they are supportive for you.
To make the bespoke journey completely seamless for you, I work in two ways. If you already have a treasured family chair or a vintage find that you want completely stripped down and rebuilt safely, you can bring it right into the studio. Alternatively, if you don't have a chair yet, I can supply the perfect classic framework from my own handpicked collection. Whichever route you choose, your only task is the joyful one: selecting your dream fabric to complete the piece.
How It Works: Your Seamless 3-Step Commission
-
1. Select Your Frame Style
I continuously source and curate a select inventory of classic frameworks—ranging from traditional high-back rocking chairs to elegant vintage nursing chairs. Every frame that enters the studio is completely stripped down, checked for absolute structural integrity, and carefully prepared for its non-toxic rebuild. If I don't have the exact style you are looking for in stock, I will actively source it for your project.
-
2. Select Your Perfect Fabric
We'll discuss your style preferences, nursery colour scheme, practical requirements, and the overall look you'd like to create. Once I have a clear understanding of your vision, I'll curate a selection of natural fabric samples chosen specifically for you and your chair.Presented in a beautifully packaged sample pack and delivered to your door, you'll be able to explore colours, textures, and finishes from the comfort of your home. The result is a thoughtful, stress-free process that transforms fabric selection from an overwhelming task into an enjoyable part of preparing for your baby's arrival.
-
3. The Natural & Handcrafted Build
Your chair is meticulously brought to life using traditional, time-honoured techniques. The internal structure is carefully built up layer by layer using a premium, natural material palette, before the piece is personally hand-finished with your chosen top-cover upholstery in my Helston workshop.
Every custom build is thoughtfully engineered for maximum comfort and wellness.
A Recent Nursery Commission
Every project that enters the studio carries its own history. Recently, a client brought her grandmother’s cherished armchair to be completely reimagined for her upcoming nursery.
Because it was a traditional piece, it was free of modern synthetics, but decades of love meant it required extensive structural care. I completely stripped it down to the framework, replaced the worn internal springs, and meticulously reshaped and padded the chair using fresh layers of natural materials. Finished in the client’s chosen fabric, this beautiful family heirloom was transformed.
“Caitlin did such an amazing job reupholstering an old nursing chair for our nursery. We are so happy with how it turned out and grateful to Caitlin for how quickly she turned this around for us. Highly recommend!”
Planning for your Baby’s Arrival
Every nursing chair is crafted by hand at my studio in Helston, Cornwall. Because I manage every frame restoration personally, studio spaces are limited each month.
I recommend reserving your nursery chair commission 12 weeks before your due date. This allows time to source materials, complete the hand-crafted restoration, and deliver your finished chair before your baby arrives.
