Restuffing Sofa Cushions with Wool

Many sofa cushions lose their shape long before the sofa itself reaches the end of its life. In many cases, replacing the cushion filling can transform both the comfort and appearance of a well-loved piece of furniture.

Recently, I restuffed a set of sofa cushions using wool instead of polyester fibre. While polyester is a common choice, wool offers a cost-effective natural alternative with a number of benefits. It is breathable, temperature-regulating, naturally fire-resistant, and provides a supportive yet comfortable feel.

One of the things I particularly like about wool is the way it ages. Rather than becoming flat and lifeless, wool fillings tend to soften and settle naturally over time while retaining their resilience. They can also be replenished and adjusted in the future if needed.

The more I work with natural materials, the more interested I become in how they behave over time. Wool isn't necessarily about creating something perfect or pristine. It compresses, softens, and responds to use. In many ways, that's what makes it appealing — a material that feels alive and improves through being lived with.
