Why I Created Natural Nursing Chairs for New Parents

When preparing for a new baby, parents often spend months researching the safest cot, the best mattress, and the most suitable nursery furniture.

Yet one of the most-used pieces of furniture in the entire nursery is often overlooked: the nursing chair.

For many parents, a nursing chair becomes the place where they feed, cuddle, soothe, read stories, and spend countless quiet moments with their baby. During those first months, it can easily become the most-used seat in the house.

Looking Beyond Comfort

Comfort is naturally a priority when choosing a nursing chair, especially during long feeds and sleepless nights. But increasingly, parents are also becoming interested in the materials that make up the furniture they bring into their homes.

Many modern nursing chairs are manufactured using synthetic foams, adhesives, and chemically treated materials. While these products are commonplace, some parents prefer to explore natural alternatives when creating their nursery environment.

That's where traditional upholstery offers something different.

Returning to Natural Materials

As a traditional upholsterer, I work with materials that have been used for generations.

Rather than relying on modern foam fillings, I rebuild chairs using carefully selected natural materials, including British wool, coir, hessian and cotton. These materials create a supportive and comfortable seat while retaining the character and craftsmanship of the original chair.

For parents looking to reduce their reliance on synthetic materials, a traditionally upholstered nursing chair can be a wonderful alternative.

A Chair with a Story

One of the aspects I enjoy most about this work is helping families create something meaningful.

Sometimes a client already owns a chair that has been passed down through generations. Other times, we work together to source the perfect vintage rocker or armchair that suits their home and nursery.

Each chair is individually restored and upholstered by hand, creating a unique piece that can continue its story with a new generation.

Designed Around Your Nursery

Every project begins with a conversation.

We'll discuss your style preferences, nursery colours, practical requirements, and the type of chair that best suits your space. From there, I curate a selection of natural fabric samples so you can choose a finish that feels right for your home.

The result is a nursing chair that is both beautiful and deeply personal.

Planning Ahead

Because traditional upholstery is a detailed, hand-crafted process, I only take on a limited number of nursery chair commissions each month.

For parents expecting a baby, I recommend getting in touch around the time of the 20-week scan. This allows plenty of time to source materials, complete the restoration, and have your finished chair delivered well before your baby's arrival.

Creating a Calm Place to Connect

The earliest months of parenthood are filled with moments that pass all too quickly.

A nursing chair becomes the backdrop to many of them.

My aim is to create chairs that are comfortable, beautiful, and made with natural materials—giving families a special place to feed, cuddle, comfort, and connect during those precious first months and beyond.
